/u/PineapplePupcake This only works without context, lol. IIRC, they're
shocked because none of them remember really drinking.
It turns out Monica's boyfriend drank almost all of it,
and that's when they realize he's an alcoholic that
needs help. |
/u/ajt425 That makes more sense, thank you |
/u/Neveronlyadream You can't really trust tweets like this, because they
almost always leave out the context for the sake of the
joke.
I don't even know what the joke is. That the OP is an
alcoholic? |
/u/DrunkGalah Pretty normal to drink at least a bottle of wine on your
own if you're at a get together with friends in your 20s
though? At least that's the case here in Norway based on
my own experiences when I was in my 20s. |
/u/DigNitty Yeah no one's disputing that. It's the crucial caveat
that one person drank four bottles to himself. |
/u/AngeloPappas Yes, but the start of the situation is one of the
friends saying something like "can you believe we drank
5 bottles of wine?" like that was something crazy. It
was only after that and people started saying they only
had 1 or 2 glasses that they realized it was Monica's
bf.
To me the joke/tweet still works. A lot of people
wouldn't have thought 5 bottles for 7 people over a
night was a lot. |
/u/Deaffin That is a crazy revelation because they weren't pounding
down the wine.
The premise isn't "It would be crazy for this number of
people to drink that much wine", it's "yo, where'd all
that wine go? I thought we barely licked that shit." |
/u/Cow_Launcher "we barely licked that shit."
Title: "The one with six friends and one cup." |
/u/Saucermote That's why you get a 5L box/goonbag of wine. |
/u/viper5delta As both an introvert and a teetotaler, apparently I
wildly underestimated how much people in my age cohort
drink. |
/u/Minimum-Fuckyou I once brought a 5th (750ml) of whiskey over to a
friend's apartment and the first thing out of his mouth
was, "this is not enough for the two of us," and he was
right. |
/u/UsernamesAre4Nerds On my worst nights, I could finish an entire fifth all
by myself |
/u/Minimum-Fuckyou in my 20's a fifth a night and wake up and be on time
for work was a common thing...
I just drink Heineken these days... can't believe I
made it out of my 20's... |
/u/nexusjuan I used to buy two fifths because if I didn't, I would
finish the first and drive back for a second, but I was
too ashamed to buy a handle. I haven't drank in 8 years. |
/u/Sgt_Fart_Barfunkle Keep it up, my dude. It isn't easy and if no one has
told you lately...you're doing great.
I know that once the 'new car smell' of not drinking
wears off...it gets harder to remember the pain attached
to why you never want to go back. It's even worse with
friends and family, who never truly got it to begin
with. The 'well I don't see why that would be a big
deal's get started.
My 3 main axioms of not drinking:
Always have an exit plan, drive yourself.
No bourbon in the house.
NEVER go with a hippy to a secondary location. |
/u/burf Even in their 20s, the stats I've seen indicate that
more than half the population either doesn't drink at
all or drinks rarely (and when they do, it's a couple of
drinks), so I don't know if your impression was
unfounded. But as soon as you hit the habitual drinker
group, the amount each person consumes absolutely
skyrockets. Once you get out of the 0-2 drinks per week
group, suddenly you've got people drinking 5-10x that
much in a week, and depending on their habits even
people who aren't classically dependent might end up
drinking 5+ drinks in a night on a weekend.
The line graph of drink consumption, like any vice, is
exponential rather than a linear one. |
/u/pat_the_bat_316 There's roughly 5 glasses of wine per bottle. And that's
if you're using a "standard pour" like what you'd get at
a bar or restaurant, which is maybe half filling up a
wine glass. At a dinner party/game night kind of thing,
you're probably pouring a little heavier and everyone is
probably having 3-5 drinks, even if you're not truly
getting after it.
If it's a proper "let's get blasted!" kinda party, it's
not crazy to see someone put back two bottles by
themselves if it's a longer night. Although they'd be
pretty hammered, and wine isn't that common of a drink
choice for those kinds of gatherings. |
/u/lizardtrench I'm pretty sure that amount counts as binge drinking and
is above average. I don't drink but have family and
friends that do, I'm not sure I've ever seen a single
bottle get finished off in the smallish (~5 people)
gatherings we normally have.
Though as with all things it depends on what bubble one
inhabits. I'm sure there are worlds people live in where
everyone around them drinks a bottle each easily. |
/u/Neveronlyadream I may be overthinking it here, but it just bugs me that
Friends is a wildly popular show and she's omitting half
the premise of the episode to make the joke like no one
is going to know. |
/u/Entire_Number_9 If you think that's bad look at the Star Trek subreddit
where thousands of people completely ignore 50 years of
television to defend and promote the lowest rated
episodes of Star Trek in 60 years. |
/u/action_lawyer_comics In the show I don't think it was a joke. They were just
kinda talking about it and at the end they realize that
one guy drank most of them |
/u/chief_beef_the_third Bingo. His nickname was "Fun Bobby," which is what
attracted Monica, but the group realizes he's only the
life of the party because he's buzzed & uninhibited all
the time. Monica helps him sober up and he becomes
lifeless & morose, lol, and it doesn't work out in the
end, of course. |
/u/PineapplePupcake And then Monica starts becoming an alcoholic herself to
deal with the boredom of spending time with him! So the
episode itself isn't all that wholesome, haha |
/u/chief_beef_the_third That's right! When I was in 5th grade, every year the
class had to do a D.A.R.E. presentation in front of the
entire middle school. Our teacher was obsessed with
Friends and we did a skit loosely based on this episode,
lol. |
/u/weedtrek I keep hearing this joke, but I guess I just had
friendlier people in my life, because I have been
offered a decent amount of drugs. It helps if you offer
some to the others as well. |
/u/AzDopefish Yeah you need to remember it's Reddit
Most people that had an active social life as a teen
came across drugs or was offered drugs unless your
social life was just nerdy things. Not saying there's
anything wrong with it, but explains the joke. |
/u/Debalic My first time smoking weed was at a church youth group
campout. The 90s were pretty awesome. |
/u/SavvySillybug I had stoner friends but wasn't a stoner myself and
constantly got offered weed by people I didn't know XD
And they were always very nice about me declining.
Always either "cool, more for me" or "good on ya, that
stuff's bad for you".
Now if you're offering me alcohol I'm definitely
accepting that shit XD |
/u/SquirrelNutRipper Happened to me at an Aerosmith concert at the Gorge. Was
like something out of a movie AND a DARE presentation. |
/u/macandcheese1771 I hope you said thank you, drugs are expensive |
/u/chief_beef_the_third Totally. The D.A.R.E. cop walked around with a joint
roach cupped in his hands and let us smell it, he told
us to narc immediately if we ever smelled that smell. I
remember thinking, "That smells pretty awesome... and I
ain't no tattle tale."
And I eventually became a lifelong cannabis enthusiast.
Not because of that incident specifically, just
coincidentally, lol. |
/u/Chill323 I've read multiple times that DARE lost a lot of steam
largely because their ads and classroom presentations
seemed to elevate drug use rather than the opposite.
They served as demonstrations and reminders, in other
words. Makes perfect sense to me. |
/u/Debalic Drugs are bad, mmmkay? |
/u/Trzlog It was never evidence-based, so of course it didn't
work. I vaguely remember reading about a competing
program that actually did work and was evidence-based,
but DARE was used instead because of politics. |
/u/Careless-Weather8877 Go to a jamband concert. |
/u/Minimum-Fuckyou RJR used to give out free packs of smokes at convenience
stores, back in the day... And you will certainly get
some free alcohol via "tastings," at your local Costco
or grocery... Free drugs galore |
/u/Mean_Can_2652 My buddy 20+ years ago used to offer mushrooms to
security staff at jamband shows. Most took him up on the
offer. Wild he never got busted from that. |
/u/devildog2067 They're for cuts and scrapes |
/u/marino1310 That was such a fucked storyline in hindsight lol.
Basically ended up ad he was fun but only as an
alcoholic, then he sobered up (something that every
alcoholic is encouraged to do) and then lost his
girlfriend and all his friends. |
/u/Olga-of-Kiev103 A little too realistic. This is what happened to me when
I sobered up. |
/u/jaxonya Sober life to an alcoholic can be VERY boring. Im just
being honest here. Had a cousin who was so much damn
fun, but he loved to drink. He was functioning, great
job, never missed work. Doctors told him to stop. He
did... was never tge same, killed himself years later
saying that lifr was no longer any fun.. none of us knew
it was that bad until we read the note |
/u/random_BA That is such cursed story specially for me. I am the guy
that's usually shy and kinda stiff and really feels that
can only enjoys parties with alcohol. The thinking
"people will only like you when you are high/drunk" it's
what almost made me a alcoholic in my early twenties. |
/u/SorryAboutMyFamily You have Dr. Steve Brule as your pfp and you said Bingo
instead of Bringo? |
/u/shadowtake thanks for the context, haven't watched it myself but
thought there was something off lol |
/u/ElderDeep_Friend Plus they always hang out. So, it was an obvious
difference from what the group typically does. It's
something that particularly matters when you're a person
who cares about their expenses |
/u/makomirocket It wasn't even about the money. It was just an offhand
comment by whoever was clearing up at the end of the
night, surprise they went through five bottles when they
had only had a glass (i.e. that would mean the rest of
the 4.7 bottles of wine was drank by the remaining 5
people). Then the next person says they also only had a
glass.
To the point that they realised that the one dude must
have consumed 3 or 4 of the 5 bottles |
/u/No_Story_Untold Yeah they stop hanging out with him when he sobers up
lol. |
/u/Greg-Abbott What a shitty lesson for any addicts watching |
/u/Illustrious_Bat1334 Addiction isn't even your biggest problem if you're
taking life lessons from a 90s sitcom. |
/u/Forsaken_Dish4228 Tbf the scene starts with Rachel pointing out that they
drank a lot that night and then they put two and two
together |
/u/Bauld_Man Right, I'm glad someone else remembers that. Rachel's
comment was "we went through a lot of wine this night
you guys". and then everyone got defensive and pointed
out they didn't drink much. And it turned out Fun Bobby
drank 3 bottles or something. |
/u/niamhxa Yeah but they only start counting how little they all
drank because they were shocked they'd drank 5 bottles.
I think Rachel starts it by saying "we drank a lot of
wine tonight you guys!" Which causes the rest to start
saying "oh well I only had 2 glasses" etc. So I'd say
the op still stands! |
/u/Murky-Jackfruit-1627 Thanks! I've watched all of Friends but forgot about
this episode. |
/u/Murphuffle And nobody remembers Russ |
/u/Jackburton06 A bit cheating here op... In this episode they are
shocked because everyone start telling he/she did not
drink much. They realize only one person almost drank
everything.
Pretty much accurate if you ever had an alcoholic
friend... |
/u/hesonthemoon Fun bobby only drank 3 bottles that's been done before |
/u/IY94 If most people have drank a glass and someone's on their
third bottle in same timeframe, then yeah... maybe a
problem there. |
/u/Necessary_Carpet7757 At the very least the persons misread the occasion. |
/u/captain_croco "Oh sorry I thought we were fucking partying, my bad" |
/u/Meerkat_Mayhem_ "I thought this was America" |
/u/1337h4xer I didn't hear no bell |
/u/SlowMope For a real story along those lines:
I was told the party was to be a proper 2009 era weeb
rager. Those were not as hard as even 4 years before
mind you, and from what I saw the worst was left back in
the 90's. But this was the year 2009, and if you were a
regular anime convention attendee type who enjoyed the
late night party's, they got weird, fun and VERY loud!
This was labeled "rager"
I expected alcohol, furies, electronica, drugs in the
corner that people were not good at hiding, etc.
I get there, and it's just people sitting in a circle
watching Oron Highschool Host Club, while they all acted
out the subtitles, like they were the voice actors. All
together. All at the same time.
So many of my friends were there already, it was too
awkward to leave. I did not participate.
Edit: to be clear, if drugs/alcohol/furries/loud music
were involved with the cult like Oron high school Host
Club viewing I would have been hella down.
It was sober. With like, the worst pretzel chips as
snacks. |
/u/Pingo-Pongo Me watching the division open in real time between Nell
and her mates sipping one glass an hour and Greg opening
his third bottle, preparing to pick my side like I'm
starting a Pokémon game |
/u/OkInflation4056 The 7 bottles were there, they must be drank. |
/u/Creative_Garbage_121 Problem with those on 1st glass doing god knows what
instead of drinking wine, 3 bottles takes quite some
time. |
/u/cerealOverdrive You don't walk into a room skull a bottle and the pound
through another before settling into the third bottle?
How do you even enjoy a good wine if you haven't battled
two low tier wines prior? |
/u/idefix24 No no, you drink the good wine first then the cheap
wine. A strategy so old it's in the Bible 😆 |
/u/cerealOverdrive You want me to skull a good bottle? |
/u/Aggravating_Fill378 Most people rank a glass over a whole evening? I know
America is weird about alcohol but Jesus.
Edit: also if I had 1 glass for a whole evening and
someone tanned 3 bottles of wine I think id notice at
the time. And probably A: get on it or B: say something |
/u/IY94 Most people rank a glass over a whole evening? That's a
whole other statement.
That's what they drank that night. Probably weren't
having a big night drinking.
We see them drunk other times. |
/u/bender3600 Ikr. Those others really need to pick up their pace. |
/u/epochpenors Most people drink sooo slooow though, it's unfair to
those of us who like getting absolutely trashed in any
available context |
/u/Academic_Flatworm752 Because fun Bobby was an alcoholic
"Other people have drinking problems too" |
/u/bender3600 Like, what are you supposed to do after 19:00. |
/u/TiniroX Happened to my sister on Thanksgiving. She brought some
nice tequila, next thing she knew the bottle was almost
empty and she barely had a drink. I on the other hand
was wasted. |
/u/Thatguy19901 I like the passive "happened to my sister" like it
wasn't you that happened lol |
/u/evthehustler We're all trying to find the guy who did this! |
/u/bitshalls It could literally be any one of us |
/u/wtfnouniquename hahah, at my buddies wedding, his dad gave him a several
hundred dollar bottle of scotch whisky. At one point his
dad said to me, "hey, if you've never had this you have
got to try it." By the end of the night we drank 3/4 of
the bottle. |
/u/DrowningInFeces I love doing that to my sister. I always bring an extra
bottle stashed away to save the day just in case. It's
come in handy more than once. |
/u/sharpshooter999 One year right after college, a group of us got together
and decided to try out some wineries as that that was
becoming a hip thing to do. There was 8 of us, one was
the DD. We'd go to a winery, split a bottle or two, eat
an appetizer, hang out by a fire pit (this was around
Thanksgiving) and then drive to the next one, rinse and
repeat. Spent the whole day doing that, and then decided
as a group to go see Bad Grandpa as a bunch of giggling
drunks.
The next day, we were looking at our receipts. 7 of us
drank a total of 14 bottles over a 12 hour period. We
had a fun weekend |
/u/Glad-Watch3506 That's only 2 bottles per, over 12 hours.
Maybe my scope is just different because I worked in
the service industry, but that's a perfectly reasonable
amount for a day out with friends. |
/u/Smasher31232 I was going to say, that isn't a particularly
interesting amount of alcohol, especially on a day
dedicated to drinking alcohol. If it was that many
bottles each, I'd be compelled. |
/u/Schwifftee For a moment I thought you were telling a story about
me. |
/u/Chataboutgames Right, but they're all listing out how much they drank
because they're surprised by how many empties there are |
/u/Lepurten If it seemed like a chill evening but there are a lot of
empty bottles you might do that, still good point |
/u/Aggravating_Fill378 Yeah but also ig 6 of us drank 2 bottles between us, im
pretty sure I would notice guy 7 skulling 3 bottles of
wine to himself during the event. |
/u/rugbroed Alcoholics are sneaky |
/u/mxzf It's one of those "sneaky, but not that sneaky" things.
Anyone not paying attention is likely to miss it, but
anyone paying attention is likely to spot it easily. |
/u/Mediocre_Chemist_168 This was me... would have at least two bottles of red
every night for years. Never thought I had a problem.
(Spoiler: I had a MASSIVE problem) stopped drinking July
2024. |
/u/PracticalMushroom693 2 bottles a night is wild |
/u/MilkHaterNumber1 Not only is that like 10 drinks. It's just sooo much
liquid. If you're gonna be an alcoholic, you need to be
drinking hard liquor. Otherwise you'll be pissing like a
horse. |
/u/Chesey_ It's like 1.5 litres. It's a decent amount of liquid but
it's not outrageous. I am a big water drinker though so
somewhat used to volume. But still, outside of straight
spirits wine is pretty much your best bet for getting
hammered without needing to be pissing constantly. |
/u/JoelnIliketoshare Did that for about 8 months. Got off work at 13:30,
13:45 I would be in the shop buying 2, 200 ml Korn
bottles and finish those off before I got the bus home
at 14:24. I would ride that high until I fell asleep at
around 19/20 o'clock every weekday except Friday and
Saturday when I would get a 700 ml bottle of vodka each
day to properly "unwind". |
/u/Mediocre_Chemist_168 pissing like a horse verified. |
/u/Peeing_Into_Stuff Happy for you. I stopped drinking about three months
after you did, 2 years sober on October 14th |
/u/ThatCartographer4324 It comes up before that though - they're only saying
they didn't drink much because (Rachel, I think) says oh
my god you guys we drank this many bottles this evening.
(And then they start reeling off well it wasn't me) |
/u/TroyMcClures TBH I always found the fact that they never drank or
really went to bars to be one of the more unrealistic
part of the show. In that era Everyone in their 20's
(unless they went way too hard in their teens/early 20's
and got sober) tends to drink fairly regularly.
Especially in NYC where the party culture was very
prominent. |
/u/SupaBloo Yeah, How I Met Your Mother was a bit more accurate on
the friends chilling at a local bar instead of a coffee
house regularly. |
/u/RanchHere Spoil it for me, bc I don't really ever care to watch
it. Was it Phoebe that drank everything? |
/u/Acrobatic_Country524 It was Monica's boyfriend at the time, "Fun Bobby," who
was an alcoholic, which they were unaware of. |
/u/SorryAboutMyFamily They were unaware? If I get introduced to someone whose
nickname starts with "Fun" I would automatically assume
they have substance abuse issues and would try to find
out what they were into so I could ask them to get me
some too. |
/u/GrowthApart2220 This is a lesson the 90s had to teach us, we were a
simple people. |
/u/jackster31415 The end of this sentence makes me think you could be
introduced as "fun" something |
/u/Argented Drunk 'Fun Bobby' got to bang Monica and they all got
along but 'Ridiculously Dull Bobby' drove Monica to
drink so he dumped her. I think Homer says it best. |
/u/Xrmy No it was Monica's boyfriend |
/u/Chataboutgames Nah, they realize that Monica's boyfriend is an
alcoholic |
/u/bc202002 It was Monica's date, who everyone called "Fun Bobby" |
/u/appleslapple The dude she was dating |
/u/Ladonnacinica I think that's what OP states is unrealistic. That most
of the people weren't drinking that much in the first
place. That most of them only had one or two glasses
throughout the evening. |
