| /u/HammyJWill anime (in general) is terrible at depicting people within their own age. Ichigo from Bleach is like 15. There's no fucking way. Dude looks like he's pushing late twenties by the end of the series and he's only like 19 or something. Dragon Ball Super famously depicted two teenagers as like... 7/8 year olds because the creators "forgot" to age them up appropriately even though their canon ages were closer to 11/12 IIRC. |

To demonstrate, he let me win the next round and I saw what he was talking about. He said if it was important to me, I could practice and get better. Tried to pass that on to my nephew. Not sure it took in quite the same way. |
| /u/highly_aware Same experiences here. I do try to be coy about it. Mario kart for instance.... I'll beat them 10/10 if I want to. But that one time they get the red shell and make the good decisions I will let them win to try and give positive feedback. It is lame if you know the other person is just letting you win with no resistance at all. |
| /u/TheGreatPiata There's a bunch of studies showing that letting someone win ~30% of the time motivates them to keep trying and do better. Losing indefinitely can often discourage the person so much they give up. I play a lot of board games and video games with my kids. I often let them win a little cause I want them to keep playing games with me :) |
| /u/FatiguedShrimp My parents strictly enforced that my younger sister (the middle child) had to win every game, every time. Even if it was a game of chance. I also couldn't be caught cheating to lose, or say no to any request to play a game. I got REALLY good at counting/stacking, etc. |

I received a silent 1 minute long phone call from a phone number in the (very sparsely populated) area we grew up after her 18th birthday. Mom was a cultist (Pentecostal) who tried to sacrifice me via starvation in an attempt to 'bring Jesus back' early. So, foster care terminated parental rights and split us up covertly with sealed records. She had been placed with a relative who kept contact up for a while, but only through scripted phone calls which was eerie. Our youngest sibling couldn't read yet, so I could literally hear adults giving her lines. Mom ended up in a mental facility after attempting suicide after an arrest. I had turned 18 and became her next-of-kin legally and was tracked down by the facility for the purpose of consenting to treatment on her behalf. The relative who adopted my sibling cut contact between us from then on, since I was 'helping your mother'. The only further (possible) contact was that call. |

| /u/Mando92MG I never purposefully throw games but i do consistently give myself handicaps when playing with my kids. I still win the large majority of the time but the win percentage is creeping towards their side slowly but surely. Not only does it let them get some wins with effort but also makes it more fun for myself. Trying to figure out how to take every opponent pawn before going for the win or any similar handicap is way more fun then just beating on a less skilled opponent. Plus the kiddos know I do this so it adds a secondary meta game of figuring out my handicap to be able to exploit it. |
| /u/breckendusk I believe in little wins. You can think of yourself as a boss fight with stages - go easy until they get a milestone and then crank up the difficulty. Someone can be encouraged by getting closer to beating you, and it allows them to get a feel for different levels of skill of play. Then when they can finally beat you while you've been handicapped, crank up the difficulty earlier and higher to show them they still have more to learn. |

| /u/__firebender__ I think its more about the game and teaching to have fun with games no matter if you win or loose. Obviously the better player needs to give the weaker player space to have fun (i.e. don't tryhard crush them), and the game needs to allow it (e.g. a fighing game with a good and a bad player is probably a lot more difficult to have fun in for (for both players), than lets say a boardgame where everyone can do its own thing without getting stunlocked. Also I think its OK to play practice/teaching rounds, where its clear that you are holding back for the benefit of learning. But thats not the same as letting them win, even if they do. I think winning a practice match is also rewarding, because you beat someone who is holding back, not who let you win just because. |

If you take suboptimal lines, eat it on a trickier corner or two, maybe brake just a bit too much into the odd corner, it's a bit easier to sell, and for him to swallow. He might still see you're taking it easy on him, who knows, but a close race feels better than passing a stopped car at the finish line |

Especially for kids, it's important that they learn winning is possible, and experience the highs of winning so as to keep pursing it. Ofc everyone's different, and "letting someone win" can look very different too. |

The first massive game console was the NES in 1985 (Yes there were other consoles before then like atari.. but really not even remotely the same). So you take your skills growing up and pit it against your 10 year old now and you will likely crush them much like this comic. |

| /u/mtaw Yes there were other consoles before then like atari.. but really not even remotely the same Sure they were. The NES was a third-generation console. The Atari 2600 (2nd gen) sold 30 million units, about half of what the NES sold. It had more or less the same processor (ie a 6502 variant) as the NES, although the NES CPU was clocked faster (as was the Atari 5200, which is also considered 2nd gen, and also had more RAM than the NES). The NES graphics chip was a variant of the TMS9918 that'd previously been used in the 2nd gen ColecoVision. The NES wasn't revolutionary as far as hardware was concerned, it was incremental. (maybe even behind the times, as all new home computer platforms then - Mac, Atari ST, Amiga were all 16/32 bit) It sold twice as many as the previous best-selling console, which is no small feat, but it's not like it's an order-of-magnitude greater. If anything the NES was a triumph of marketing, bringing the industry back after the infamous crash of 1983, and a triumph of quality games, not least because Nintendo had a draconian control over releases, wanting to avoid the oversaturation of the market with bad games that'd precipitated the 1983 crash. |

They'd do things like play Wario Stadium, and keep trapping a certain place on the map(The ramp jump) and cause the computer to fall and be set back. They'd keep this going for an hour sometimes, just messing around. My uncle's friend came over once, and had a huge ego. He kept getting frustrated with my mom and uncle using shortcuts and ranting about how they were cheating. Eventually, he tried to be 'nice' and include us kids by challenging us, instead, but clearly wanting to blow off some steam. My mom and uncle were always cooperative racers, where they'd swap between 1st and 2nd to make sure that they both beat the computer. So, really, they hadn't been going full-tilt and being competitive against him. But when he challenged us kids? He got demolished and he was furious. (He also stole some games that he borrowed later on) |
